Wrath Paine vs. Mandatory Options

Grrr. Don't you just love when I start a blog entry already making irritated noises? Means I'm about to complain, and unfortunately, I'm sure you've heard this all before. On this very blog, even.

I go to log in using the FirstLook WindLight® viewer, and I notice a little message box on the title screen indicating a new version 1.19 something or other is available for download, but that's okay, because we here at Linden Lab have made upgrading optional and while we recommend you install this latest version with all the cool fixes and stuff, we won't force you to at this time. Have a nice day.

Awww, cool - I really respect LL sometimes, ya know? So, I put in my user name and password and hit connect. Things start downloading for only a fraction of a second before that stupid pop up message shows up saying, I'm sorry, there's a newer version out that you must install in order to get any further. Would you like to Continue or Quit?

Damn! There goes my one option. What I apparently missed on the initial message was, the new version is optional in the sense that you can install or not have access to SL. Silly me, I always fall for that and think it means I could still access SL using my only slightly dated version of the client.

One of these days I'll learn, and get it right, I promise you!! Until then, I'm sure I'll continue to be as gullible as always, believing LL is giving me a choice.

Needless to say, I installed the stupid update. Hey! They made cosmetic changes to the viewer, this ought to make things run more smoothly!

Check out the new icons at the top of the screen I kept noticing whenever I teleported anywhere:
New icons

Sorry, but without using binoculars or sticking my nose to the screen, from a distance it sure looks like everywhere I went, I was expecting to see men in go-karts racing around. Is that not a blue man driving a topless vehicle? Could swear I see a dude sitting in a driving position, with a yellow steering wheel and red wheels in front and back of him. Those are actually the symbols for no build, restrict pushing? Erm, okay, if you say so.

Even the bottom part of the viewer is looking all fancy these days, with the curved buttons now all compacted and everything in a supposed ergonomical placing, I guess.

Cosmetic changes

But ya know, that damn chat button in the very bottom left corner was way too small for me to get used to it in one evening - I kept missing it when I went to click on it and hitting the communicate button. Which, you can always use to see the history of chat text by selecting "Near me" on the communicate window. Uh, I still don't think that button should be called "Near me" as most of what I find in my "history" is which friends went offline or are now online or what a vendor gave me - not what anyone 'near me' is saying, as I'm usually standing alone in my yard staring at my over-sized too small of a house. :-| Shup.

And when you do manage to click the chat button and have the text window pop up to type in, why do they label it "Local chat"? As opposed to... long distance chat? Or IM, maybe? I don't really know. And Alicia will be happy to see the "shout" button is hidden, now. I think the up arrow next to the "say" button might reveal it, but maybe it will make it harder for n00bs at clubs to abuse. At least for a few seconds.

The music tab is all fancy now - with volume levels right there and stuff - very nice. I am secretly afraid streaming music is the next thing LL will take away from us, but so far, they're putting lots of redesign into that button selection, and I'm quite happy about that.

Oh, wait, is that a filming/machinima button?? Sweeet!! See that movie camera button, there? Although it's greyed out on mine. Oh, wait, nevermind, I see, it's not a shortcut to filming, it's just to play streaming video, huh? Ah, this backup computer I run WindLight® on does not have Quicktime installed yet, must be the reason the button doesn't work, gotcha.

Although that brief moment of elation did give me the idea that perhaps it would be rather cool if LL could allow us to add our own buttons down there, huh? Someday. Maybe. Not.

Hey, isn't that gesture button oh so cute now?? It got a pretty nice cropping this time around, poor thing. Probably has size envy now.

But with all the condensing of buttons, utilizing that up arrow symbol to indicate more options for communicate, talk, say, and music levels - - why is the arrow symbol on the gesture button still pointing down? When I click it, the menu pops upwards listing all the gestures, not a drop down list.

I am telling you, the gesture dude totally got shafted this time around and we need to stand up for the little guy!

Who's with me?

Oh yeah, I didn't realize until I was getting ready to log off that the friends list totally wasn't working, and not the normal (hippos) bug, either.

My guess is they are hoping that by moving everything around and trying to make it look pretty that we won't notice all the stuff that stopped actually working.

I don't hate shouting.
Except when I am at home.
Drat that stupid club.

But hey hey, look at you. 2 days, 2 posts. I might have to stop calling you a slacker. Maybe. Probably not. :-p

Here's some more genius items about the redesign /SARCASM.

* The "Release Keys" button is now right fricking above the chat button. So if I go to say something, answer an IM or even stand up, it's totally awesome to detach my AO, Mysti Tool, and whatever else is attached as a HUD. YAY.

* It also conveniently covers my chat history but that's OK - who wants to see chat anymore? SRSLY.

* IMs no longer blink when someone types something new. They just kind of glow. That's also OK because I'm sure whatever the person is saying to me wasn't important and I should just log off thinking our conversation was over.

I cannot express my distaste for the new position of the release keys button enough. I detached my mystitool and my AO about 25,000 times last night. Completely annoying.

They put Jesus in SL.

Just sayin

:: Coughs.:: Yaknow.. you can just hit the enter key once to bring up the chat line.. then hit enter again to send.. You.. don't have to click on the chat button. And.. it's much easier if you just use the key shortcuts for most of those windows. ^^;; I have mine set so the 'near me' window is split off from the stupid ass communication window, and positioned where the old school chat history was. Ctrl+H and Ctrl+T are my friends. ^^;

OMG! So THAT is why I kept losing my MystiTool HUD??? Dang, that thing DID get detached a billion times last night, I thought it was the new dual 9mm holstered weapons I was testing! LOL Sheesh, bad viewer design all around. (Kat, the chat line was already up, but when you click to put your cursor in it to type, that's when you detach your HUD, etc. if you are slightly off in your aim. Or just by trying to alt zoom while setting up stuff in my house I always ended up detaching it, also - it was very much in the way.)

And yep, it was totally blocking chat text on the screen - I was trying to test a script, but couldn't read the message on the screen and had to open the history - via the communicate window. Very lame.

Now I totally want to see the no fly icon! What the heck are they thinking with those new symbols?? Did they hire a new team to come up with error symbols and icons that are supposed to translate to all langauges? Because they're not working!

I can't wait to log in next and find out more stuff I don't like about it. :-)

Is there a way to resize or re-position those buttons? If not, there should be. Soon, there will probably be an option to move those buttons around. I can't figure out how to do it yet if there is.
