Censorship on the Playa!

How Much More Can We Take?

Iridium's Apology NOW!

That's right, folks:

Censorship at Burning Life. Again.

Argh! Over artwork, even! I hate censorship of art, I really do. Probably more so in Second Life than in real life, even. I'm not sure why, but probably because of the whole "it's your imagination; it's your world" philosophy that SL was supposedly based on.

Residents of more than a week realize that's not exactly accurate.

But seriously, when you start censoring stuff in SL that isn't even censored in the real world, that just doesn't make sense to me.

So there were some nude sculptures of women, fairly anatomically correct, which happened to be placed in a PG sim.

Okay, so what is a PG sim? Without looking it up in some lengthy Terms of Service agreement, I should be able to apply common sense, right? I'm not that slow mentally, even though my avatar might act so in SL. ;-)

I would think PG meant 'parental guidance' suggested, as in the real world. But that wouldn't really make sense, because the Terms of Service say you have to be over 18 to be on the main grid (By accepting this agreement in connection with an Account outside the Teen Area, you represent that you are an adult 18 years of age or older.), so why would they be telling everyone to have their parents present while in certain areas of SL? Are there even any G sims to escape from PG and Mature material?? (I don't think so, the Global Standards only says: Locations within Second Life are noted as Safe or Unsafe and rated Mature (M) or non-Mature (PG))

Maybe I can look up the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) guidelines:

A PG-rated motion picture should be investigated by parents before they let their younger children attend. The PG rating indicates, in the view of the Rating Board, that parents may consider some material unsuitable for their children, and parents should make that decision.

The more mature themes in some PG-rated motion pictures may call for parental guidance. There may be some profanity and some depictions of violence or brief nudity. But these elements are not deemed so intense as to require that parents be strongly cautioned beyond the suggestion of parental guidance. There is no drug use content in a PG-rated motion picture.

Wait, did that just mention nudity, being allowed, even if briefly? Well, at least they certainly are more specific than trying to determine what they might consider "broadly offensive".

Okay, so what if LL offered to move the sculptures to Mature sims - that's not the point. I just looked up the admission guidelines for my local art museum. Nowhere does it say you have to be over 18 to be admitted, and even then, certain exhibits will be segregated for content.

Might just have to consider getting the real world NOW organization to file a protest, hehe.

I don't know, but I certainly am not liking the direction LL is taking with all the new policies and enforcements. I predict that eventually, SL will be the kid-friendly, AOL of virtual worlds... and by that time, I will have moved on to a less restrictive, and less laggy, one.

if this keeps all the girls are going to need to wear censorship boxes because our clothes could be considered to "mature" for second life

wrath: Ok, I will then be setting up the fixed data one of these dates, so all those interested can come and visit and we all meet at the same time :) is 3pm PST one of the saturdays ok ?

(the "selfish" goal i have is to see how the thing behaves with more than 3-4 avatars).

tiana: don't worry. just find the skin designers who would be willing to sell you the "textures" vs. the draconian no-nothing items :)
