Wrath Paine vs. Updates

It's an "update" Wednesday - new viewer version 1.17. I am not sure if it was required or not, as I went ahead and downloaded it immediately, regardless, as my v.1.16 had stopped working for me and I have been having to use the First Look WindLight Viewer - meaning no clouds and no day/night phases for me.

I uninstalled v.1.16 and restarted my computer to do a fresh install of v.1.17. Guess what? Same problem - I double click the icon, the program acts like it's starting up, then disappears. Every single time. Won't even load enough to let me enter user name and password - just nothing. *sigh*

But wait, there's an alternative now to the First Look WindLight Viewer - that's right, I can try the First Look Voice Viewer on the main grid! Surely that one will have clouds and day and night time!

I install it, and it works - sweet! Only, things are different now - where is my chat history button?? Gone, that's where. Where is my friends list window?? Linden has done some consolidating, it seems and now everything is combined into one huge window that holds your IM conversations, your chat history (now called 'near me') and your friends list. Oh, and your Groups. As well as your Voice features. All in one nice window that easily and quickly blocks the majority of the view of your screen! No, seriously. Starting conversations with people and I soon realized that new window was blocking out everything I had been trying to look at - suddenly I was only reading in SL, and not looking. I am guessing this won't be a problem if I was using voice to communicate, but really, how am I supposed to juggle an average of five or more conversations at once, like I do now, all with Voice?? I don't think it is possible - I will have people talking over each other and I'll be forgetting what someone said by the time I can respond to them... which means I will still need text options, and that new set up was annoying! Although, that window did have a cool 'tear away' option which allows you to make each IM window it's own, which you will have to see to understand, but might be cool. So far, however, it just seems like the First Look Voice Viewer is designed to discourage text chat.

Anyway, by the end of the evening, I had 45 ghost prims on my property which were being "Selected/Sat upon" but at least this time it wasn't 200+ prims and also, everyone else seemed to be experiencing the same thing so hopefully Linden will jump on correcting it sooner. I am pretty sure nothing less than a sim reboot will remove the objects, so I will be waiting for that to take place.

Oh, and I did crash more times in one evening that I normally do all week. Vint seems to think it was due to closing IM windows, and she might be right. I just know my viewer (any of them I used) would suddenly close down at odd times. And Vint was showing up as online/offline so frequently I was going to ask her if I could remove her from my friends list for the evening until SL fixed things, so I could avoid all those notices. Checking my chat history log, I show no less than 22 notices that Vint was either online or offline. I would've said hello to her, but I felt like we were already having a conversation, with her name appearing on my screen so often. ;-)

So, with the new viewer not working on my machine, the unpleasant design of the new First Look Voice Viewer, the sudden and unexplained crashes, the invisible ghost prims, I also had plenty of lag and inventory issues, not to mention a friends list functioning half the time. Fun night in SL!

Of course, I blame it all on Voice. Seems like last update we had so many issues was when they were testing Voice, and now that it's hitting the main grid, I am not surprised more issues of stability. There is a link with a map to find out which regions currently have Voice enabled, but that seems to be working for me about as well as anything else (not good). So, I didn't go around looking for any voice sites to see what that would be like, however, earlier in the day, I did order a headset so I'll be ready for that option. I had been meaning to get a headset so I could try out Skype, and with SL getting voice, seemed a good as time as any. I think Voice will help when hanging with a group of friends, so we'll see how common it gets. Then maybe I can add podcasts to this blog, hmmmm.

Well, despite all the interruptions in my SL experience, I had a wedding to go to! My first in SL and I just had to see how it would proceed. So, I called up my dear friend Elusyve to see if she would accompany me, despite being her bedtime, and being a girl who likes to dress up, she said yes. But before we went, we were talking and she reminded me that she had posted notes from the blade training class she attended last weekend on her blog, which had some very handy tips I need to remember (such as: Slash beats Kick - Kick beats Block - Block beats Slash) and thus I bestowed upon her the worthy title of Bloggers with Blades, so, welcome to the clan, Elusyve!

But on to the wedding... and of course, I'm referring to the HawksRock Gunawan & JellyBean Madison wedding party. I felt honoured to have received an invite, so there was no way I was going to miss out on hanging with the cool kids.

The wedding announcement itself was highly entertaining - when you retrieve it from your inventory, a Mountain Dew® bottle appears on the ground, hehe. Clicking that will open up the wedding invite - Tringo inspired, nonetheless. Too funny. And very nicely done.

I did send an IM to Jelly before the wedding (even though I figured she would be swamped with last minute details, IM's and nervousness) to find out if it was okay if I brought a date and if she would mind me getting some video footage. She replied promptly (that girl can multi-task like none other!) and answered in the affirmative to all. Thus, I will be editing some video hopefully, and won't post as many pics here today. And yes, either due to lag or update Wednesday or both, I did eventually crash out of the wedding near the end, but at least I grabbed some video clips. I was struggling to keep SL active and didn't make it to the reception, however, so I am hoping someone saved me some cake.

And yes, SL weddings can really imitate RL weddings - the decorations were incredibly detailed, and the seating was arranged just so the last row could still hear the wedding service, and poseballs were used to add to the realism of body language.

Oh, and if you're worried about guests staying awake for your wedding ceremony, it doesn't hurt to have the person who is conducting it look something like this, just sayin':

One thing did baffle me, however, and I will wonder about it until I can find out from Jells what the story was, but, is it just me, or were there two newbies crashing this ceremony?

I mean, maybe I missed something, but I didn't hear anyone asking them to move, and I don't think they did the entire time, but there they were - a male avatar standing over by the bridesmaids, and a female standing on the groomsmen side. If they were newbies crashing the wedding on accident, you would think they would've said something or at least sat with everyone else instead of standing right there. But at least no exposed pen1ses. So who knows, maybe they were invited?

In other news, I might be able to attend the next blogger party, although no time has been announced, but I can promise already I won't be in costume. ;-)

Have I said lately just how impressed I am with the quality of work coming from the M is for Myg camp? Crap, I'd be tempted to buy a product which looked this good at the bookstore! Damn those overachievers, anyway! ;-)

Tiana never fails to get good discussions going on her blog, and this time, she had to spin off and form a new blog to handle the traffic. It's all about the possibility of a group of bloggers joining togethr to buy a sim and creating something suitable to their own tastes, under their own control. Trying to think of all the logistics involved in making that a reality, however, bogs my brain down far too easily - there is just so many things to consider! I'd love to see it happen, though, and who knows, maybe it will. The main question seems to be will it be Island or Mainland?

I cannot believe how much effort Vint must have had to put in for starting the SLelections 2007 project. The participation has been overwhelming, with many people being extremely creative in their faux campaign platforms. I have to admit, I was not familiar with Erbo Evans before now, but his work has been so realistic in its parody I wouldn't be surprised if actual US Presidential candidates didn't start copying his style. Good job to Vint for not only starting this satire, but for participating, as well. That's a lot of work.

Speaking of, Zoe has released part two in her series The Disappearance of Zoe Connolly and the suspense just keeps building! And I still don't know how she manages to juggle so many projects, such as maintaining The World's Largest Blogroll of Second Life Links (454?) and keeping so updated on the Second Life Blogosphere, which I keep meaning to lend a hand with, but she is far more adept at it than I could ever be and I feel I would only get in her way.

Dalien is another who has been busy with a multitude of projects lately, tackling anything which seems difficult to solve. Not sure exactly how he manages to fit his RL brain into his SL avatar, but it's impressive. He has been sharing that knowledge lately, with posts on land security, DeliHUD, scripting classes and primskirt builder GUI for LoopRez. Ask him a question, and he goes out of his way to solve it. Love that.

And seeing as how everyone is keeping so busy, I should probably go do something, myself. Later!

Hahaha yes we saw the nooblets, they were actually ejected and ghosting there. Being that I crashed, I didn't see them. Damnit! O.o Thanks for coming Wrath, I was honored to have Mr Blogger of the Bloggers there himself. :D

sounds like you had a really busy wednesday hehe.

i do also hope that blogger land lifts up from the ground. i just wished more people participated. right now we have like only 5 or 6 people putting in their opinions on what to do and trying to make the project go forward :(

i dont want to sound pessimistic but if people expect this to happen magically or just have 1 person taking care of eveything it probably wont happen. :(

My friend Mr. Flamingo tells me that he is very sad of not being mentioned at all ;)

Timothy, that is likely because I might have wanted to go around and see if I couldn't do some more Mr. Flamingo spotting myself to confirm the legitimacy of your post, so as not to fall for a hoax, hehe. Although, I have to admit, I am pretty sure I did see Mr Flamingo in my yard before he flew off to Vint's slylab! Stay tuned for more...

Vint, I was trying to think of any temporary fix until you got all settled into SL. ;-) But, then I decided to let things be and just watch you pull a Dalien, and repeatedly try to stay connected for longer than five minutes. I was rooting for you! And also hoping you could break the record of 28 log in attempts in three hours. So close, babe. ;-)

Hmm. Ok, then. And about that Flamingo: Timothy, be sure you have not heard the last word or gunshot about that one, yet!

heh...I would hope the Presidential candidates put more effort into their materials than I did. :-)

But I've just pushed out another campaign poster, and I plan on rolling out another radio spot this weekend.

OK, I'll try to keep Mr. Flamingo silent for a while. He's just too curious and needs a lot of attention, obviously.
